Major Blows to AAP: Key Party Founder Shazia Ilmi Leaves While Kejriwal in Jail
Key Party Members Shazia Ilmi and Captain Gopinath Resign
Shazia Ilmi and Captain Gopinath have resigned from all party posts on the account of “lack of inner party democracy” and “increased differences”. Ilmi was quoted as saying, “My decision to leave the party is triggered by the lack of inner-party democracy, especially from a party that constantly talks of Swaraj. We fight against cronyism but we have a crony clique which runs the party and takes impulsive decisions which we learn about later. I find it amazing that we cannot follow the principles of Swaraj within our own party.”
Kejriwal Bail Politics
BJP leader Nitin Gadkari filed a defamation case in Delhi court for including his name in the party’s list of “India’s most corrupt.” Because he has failed to pay the bond, he has to remain in custody until June 6th.
The court magistrate commented on Kejriwal’s decision:
There is a lot of legal illiteracy in the country. Even educated people do not know about legal proceedings as to what is bail and what is bond. Being in the position you (Kejriwal) were, I expect you to be sensible.
The magistrate further explained:
You (Kejriwal) have been summoned as an accused. You are not a convict. You will face trial…you cannot say that I am innocent and I will not give bond. This is a procedure.
Yet, AAP leaders insist that Kejriwal’s refusal pay bail is a principled stance, since he doesn’t think he is guilty. NDTV reports that after he was arrested, 60 AAP supporters clashed with police officers.
